Beware the Slenderman

The long anticipated HBO film, Beware the Slenderman finally has a release date scheduled--January 23rd.

The film, directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky, is a documentary covering a disturbing crime and the strange story behind it.

In May, 2014 two 12 year old girls in Waukesha, Wisconsin lured a classmate into the woods and attempted to kill her. Despite being stabbed 19 times, the victim survived. Perhaps the most unsettling aspect of the case was the reasoning behind the attempted murder--the girls thought that by sacrificing a classmate, they would be allowed to go deep into the forest and live with the mythical Slenderman in his mansion.

Brodsky promises to delve into the effects that Internet lore, such as the Slenderman, has on real life actions and behaviors, as well as examining the digital age's affect on the imagination and perceptions of children.

The two girls, who are slated to be tried as adults, have consistently claimed that the Slenderman "made them" commit the act. Brodsky purportedly had access to the families connected to this tragedy, so their perspective on the events will also be presented.

I've long spoken out about the dangers of the Slenderman mythos and the potential that the figure is a modern tulpa being created before our very eyes via the Internet.

HBO has just released a trailer for the upcoming film:
