The Battle for Greystone Park

Greystone.

The name itself evokes haunting images of mysterious old structures and dark corridors.  This large, historic complex sits abandoned, smack dab in the middle of modern suburbia.  Now, its fate hangs in the balance while preservation groups struggle to save it.
Properly known as “Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital,” the building originally opened in 1876 as the New Jersey Lunatic Asylum at Morristown, receiving the now well-known moniker Greystone Park in 1924.  Greystone was built in the style of Second Empire Victorian on 743 acres of land and totaled a sprawling 673,706 square feet.

The facility was designed to accommodate around 600 patients, but it quickly became overcrowded, housing 800 within its first four years.  The numbers grew dramatically, by the early 1900s numbers were in the thousands, and by the early 1950s, well over 7,000 patients were housed at the location.  Numbers finally declined in the 70s and by the 1990s, the main building was reduced to administrative use only.  NJ Governor Christine Todd Whitman announced the closure of the facility in 2003.
Over the years, Greystone was plagued with stories of patient abuse, sexual assaults and suicides.  On several occasions, disturbed patients managed to escape, causing concern to families in the surrounding towns.

Folk singer Woody Guthrie spent time in Greystone in the 1950s after being diagnosed with Huntington’s disease.

One strange tale, covered by Weird NJ magazine, involves a Norwegian sailor named Fogelma who was committed to Greystone.  According to an article published in the Empire News in 1923, Fogelma frequently went into fits of rage and described details from the infamous murders in Whitechapel, London.  The sailor’s information was such that it led some people to believe that he could have been Jack the Ripper himself.  Greystone researchers have been unable to verify the man’s time at the hospital, so, for now at least, the story may simply be a fanciful tale.  But Greystone isn’t short on lore, like many old mental hospitals, it has its share of ghostly legends.  Shadow people, apparitions and strange sounds coming from the buildings have been common over the years.  Dark tunnels connecting the various buildings run under Greystone and the few people that have entered them report unsettling feelings and the sense of being watched and followed.  Even former employees of the hospital have unpleasant memories of the tunnels.
Locals report the feeling of being watched even when they are outside viewing the buildings.  Vacant windows stare out, hiding, perhaps, the spirits of former residents.

Now, it’s possible this historic, creepy building will be lost to the ravages of “development.”
In what appears to be shady political moves, New Jersey declined offers to restore the building, without cost to the state, and instead elected to award a $34.4 million dollar demolition bid to Northstar Contracting Group.
Preservation groups are now fighting with the state to save the historic building.

To learn more about Greystone and the questionable moves that have led to the battle for its preservation, I encourage you to watch the five minute video linked below.  There’s also a FB page dedicated to keeping people updated on developments.

The Buddha Smiles At Anger

Here's some great food for thought, a story of how the Buddha would deal with angry trolls and hateful people:

One day Buddha was walking through a village. A very angry and rude young man came up and began insulting him. "You have no right teaching others," he shouted. "You are as stupid as everyone else. You are nothing but a fake."

Buddha was not upset by these insults. Instead he asked the young man "Tell me, if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?"

The man was surprised to be asked such a strange question and answered, "It would belong to me, because I bought the gift."

The Buddha smiled and said, "That is correct. And it is exactly the same with your anger. If you become angry with me and I do not get insulted, then the anger falls back on you. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you have done is hurt yourself."

"If you want to stop hurting yourself, you must get rid of your anger and become loving instead. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you love others, everyone is happy."

I'm not sure of the origin of the story, and it would certainly be easy to replace Buddha with Jesus, the Great Spirit, or whatever fits your personal path.  The spiritual lesson is a good one either way.  Love life and the people you care for, it gets better everyday!

Blood Miracles

Recently, Pope Francis was in Naples, Italy for a public ceremony.  During his appearance, he held a relic connected to the patron saint of Naples, Saint Januarius.  The relic, a glass vial, contains the dried blood of the saint, and, after being kissed by the pope, the blood was shown to have liquefied—half way.
The Archbishop of Naples, Crescenzio Sepe, proudly displayed the relic to the crowd and proclaimed:

“The blood has half liquefied, which shows that Saint Januarius loves our pope and Naples.”

Pope Francis, well known for his quips, responded:
“The bishop just announced that the blood half-liquified.  We can see the saint only half loves us.”

Recent headlines about this incident imply that it’s something new, possibly connected to the current pope, but this is actually an old story.  In fact, the liquefaction of the saint’s blood has been going on for six centuries.
The saint was a Roman bishop, decapitated during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian in 305 AD.

Ceremonies to display the saint Januarius relic are held on a regular basis, with throngs of worshipers praying and waiting for the liquefaction of the blood.  Legend says that on the occasions that the blood remains solid, disaster soon follows.  The faithful point to examples of this from the past, including widespread famine in 1559, the cholera outbreak of 1833 and bombing raids by allied aircraft in 1944, all of which occurred after the saint’s blood remained solid.

The collection of blood was a common practice during periods of the persecution of Christians.  Believers would soak cloths or articles of clothing in the blood of martyrs, or if possible, gather the blood in vials that would later be buried with the martyr’s body.  When later Christians discovered these items, they would give them special recognition as powerful relics.
Once removed from the body, blood soon coagulates, spoils and dries.  When the liquefaction of the blood of saint Januarius occurs, the vial of coagulated blood is seen to liquefy and often, bubble and froth, at which point the cardinal announces:

“The miracle has happened.”
The church is usually packed beyond capacity for these events.

In the past, the ceremony was held up to 18 times a year, but in more recent times, that number has been reduced down to 3 times per year, including the saint’s feast day.
Skeptics often proclaim that the blood simply liquefies due to the heat from nearby candles, or possibly the hands of the priest but the event has occurred in a wide range of temperatures and each time, the speed of the liquefaction is different.  There have also been times when the blood remained solid under identical conditions.

Further adding to the mystery of the blood, it seems to change in volume.  At times, it fills only half of the vial, while on other occasions, it completely fills the container.  Additionally, both its color and viscosity have been known to vary during the ceremonies.  Then there’s the issue of the blood’s weight.  In experiments conducted in 1902 and 1904, the blood was found to vary in weight, increasing as much as 25 grams defying the laws of nature.  The 1902 experiments were also used to confirm that the substance in the vial is indeed blood.
The relic of saint Januarius is not completely unique.  In Italy alone, there are almost 200 blood samples from various saints.  Many of these sample are said to liquefy on religious holidays and during times of veneration.

One theory claims that they blood relics respond to vibration form movement and the attention of the priest continually checking on the liquefaction process.  However, some blood relics are locked in cases and merely observed as the process unfolds.

One interesting theory posed to explain the varied reactions of the blood is that the human substance responds to the focus, prayers and willpower of the gathered worshipers, an act of mind affecting matter.
Over the years, countless scientist have attempted to reproduce or explain the reaction of blood relics, but so far, no “rational” explanation has been presented.  Religious believers could care less about the science, as long as the blood continues to give the all clear and not indicate pending disaster.

It should be noted that, despite his humorous comment, by the end of the current pope’s visit, the saint’s blood was said to have completely liquefied.

Black Eyed Terrorist?

Recently, a number of people have sent me photos of ISIS members which they believe depict people with black eyes in league with the terrorist organization.

The latest was brought to my attention by L.A. Marzulli, who has of course done his own research into the creepy BEKs.  This particular pic is all the more disturbing in terms of the terrorist connection since it shows a boy of around 12 years old.  A video released by the terrorist group shows this young boy executing an Israeli prisoner.  According to the news report:

"A baby-faced executioner who looks to be no older than 12 appears to kill an Israeli Arab who confesses to being a Mossad spy in the latest stomach-turning video released by ISIS."

When dealing with terrorism and modern political and cultural struggles, it's always interesting to wonder what, if any, role the paranormal plays.  It's a big question and one not easily answered as it makes people a bit nervous.  Adding the unknown to something like terrorism is an unsettling prospect.

In all the photographs I have seen so far, I see no evidence that leads me to believe that the black eyed children are involved with these atrocious acts.  The latest photo in question appears below, along with a news story detailing the video.  I caution you here about the violent content contained in the links to the video.
Enlarging the picture reveals that while the child's eyes are very dark, there are whites slightly visible so we probably aren't looking at a typical BEK.

While the black eyed children are quite disturbing in their own right, I believe we are dealing with something even more frightening; killers with no consciousness and an agenda to hurt as many people as they can in the name of religion.

The use of children in these actions is a chilling statement, best summed up by Veryan Khan of the Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium:

“The use of a child executioner is significant because ISIS is demonstrating the “growing” Caliphate and that they are raising their next generation of warriors now.”

With the continued growth of ISIS and their goal to wage war against Jews, Christians and the West in general, I suspect that, sadly, we will see more stories of this nature.

As to the prospect of paranormal involvement in terrorism, I don't discount the possibility at all.  In fact, there is a huge question regarding the connection between the Djinn and Islamic terrorist.  But that's a topic for another time.
