The Fire Poltergeist of Paris

France 1907.
In the otherwise quiet Paris suburb of La Corneuve, thirty mysterious fires broke out in the space of less than a week.
Two houses were gutted and several outbuildings were completely destroyed and while the first fire could be blamed on a lightning strike, the ones that followed were unexplainable.

The series of fires began on Wednesday, September 11 when a bolt of lightning struck a house on Rue de I'Abreuvoir.  The house caught fire, but fortunately the flames were quickly extinguished and there were no sings of lingering sparks or flames.

On Thursday, more fires sprang up.  Two detached sheds were burned to the ground and the home of a neighbor, 150 feet away caught fire.

On Friday, the fires manifested again.  This time, flames suddenly appeared in the basement of the first home.

But things got even stranger on Saturday.  A neighbor, Monsieur Scillier, walked into his dining room to find a loaf of bread on the table blazing away.  The table itself then caught on fire.  In a nearby cupboard, flames suddenly shot up not once, but twice.

Was a poltergeist at work?  One fascinated with the use of fire?

No sources for the sudden outburst of fires could be found.

On Sunday and Monday, the random blazes continued to plague the area.  Flames shot back and forth between the two houses.  A box of knives burned until nothing but the blades remained.

Twenty five witnesses watched as an umbrella suddenly caught fire and burned up.

Fires, especially unexplained ones, were a great concern for the time.  An out of control blaze could spread quickly and do a massive amount of damage.  This being the case, fire officials were quick to respond to the strange blazes, but while they were on the scene, they were still at a loss to explain the random blazes.  A fireman working at the location was busy removing items he thought were potential combustibles.  He picked up an old hat and tossed it out an open window.  As the hat sailed through the window, it brushed by the curtains.  Both the hat and the curtains burst into flames.

By Tuesday, the frequency of the random fires finally decreased.  Only one fire was reported and it sprang up in a garden between the buildings.

But much damage had been done.  Both of the main homes that were affected had, by this time, been mostly destroyed.

A newspaper report in the Paris Matin stated:

"The staircases in both houses are crumbling into dust.  A bright crystalline dust comes from them at the slightest contact."

While it's clear that the first blaze was initiated by a lightning strike, authorities were positive that fire had been extinguished.  The 29 fires that followed remain a mystery and many were left believing that a troublesome poltergeist had been responsible for the destruction.

More Flying Chupacabras

Earlier this month I reported on a weird encounter in Puerto Rico with a winged creature that had similarities to the infamous blood drinking chupacabras.  The case isn't the only time that such entities have been reported.  South America, a gold mine of chupacabra reports and high strangeness in general has several such cases that I've come across.

Over the years, Chile has been a hotbed of chupacabras activity.  In April 2007, researcher Ivan Voreved was investigating a series of incidents involving farm animal deaths in Chile's 6th Region.  On April 6,7 and 8th of that year, a series of attacks involving a strange creature took place in the small town of Pan de Azucar.

The witnesses, identified in reports by the initials "J.C" and "A.R.," shared their accounts with Voreved.  On the morning of April 7th, at eight o'clock, A.R., a farmhand, discovered twenty-nine dead chickens in a coop on the property.

A.R. stated that the chickens looked liked they had been crushed by something and one of them displayed a hole in its back that reached down into its entrails.  The hen looked completely bloodless and all of the carcasses displayed what A.R. described as a certain "orderliness" about them.  (Such meticulous alignment of animal bodies as come up in other attacks blamed on chupacabras).
Neither the property owners or neighbors could find an explanation for the strange attack on the chickens.
J.C., the property owner, is a self professed skeptic when it comes to the chupacabras.  However, he too was at a complete loss and could find no rational explanation for the events on his farm.

But this wasn't the only attack in the region and other witnesses claim that got a glimpse of the creature that was causing trouble.

Not far from J.C.'s farm, another bizarre incident took place.  On a quiet dirt road, witnesses reported seeing what they first though was "something like a black trash bag," falling off the roof of a nearby house.  Upon closer inspection of the dark object, it began to move and then jumped and took off into the air as a witness approached it.  The strange, flying entity measured about a meter and a half and eyewitnesses said it had amazing speed once airborne.

The witnesses to the dark, flying creature were deeply shaken by their encounter.  Local residents stated that the creature was most certainly a chupacabras and point to numerous similar cases and attacks in the area over the years.

These reports were originally compiled by researchers Raul Nunez and Ivan Voreved and translated by Scott Corrales.

Black Eyed Adult in Chile 1956

I'm constantly asked about new encounters with black eyed beings.  While it's true that new cases continue to be reported on a regular basis, I'm personally very interested in older accounts that predate any modern influence by television or the internet.  When researching my book on the Black Eyed Children, I uncovered some cases, but more continue to come to light.

Researcher Albert Rosales is always unearthing obscure and fascinating cases and he's been coming across some that contain encounters with black eyed people.  Here's a recent one he posted from Chile that involves a black eyed woman.  The case is from 1956.  Thanks to Jamie L. Brian for bringing it to my attention:

Rancagua, Chile
1956

The witness, Lorenzo Venegas (currently an evangelical Methodist Pastor) was 5-years of age at the time, lived in a large house with a swing set in the back yard. According to Lorenzo there were rumors that his father was a practicing ‘Warlock’ but he did not believe it. But at times strange things would happen in the house.

He remembers playing with his brothers and being visited by a woman dressed all in white with braided hair and with eyes that were completely black. For some reason the youngster felt no fear of her. When they told their parents they were not believed and their parents would laugh. Apparently his parents were not able to see the lady, only the young children could see her.

One day according to Lorenzo she saw the lady and she was crying. She told him that she was leaving because “they no longer needed her”, and she no longer had “permission” to play with them. The children would call her “the white lady” because her skin was so pale, “just like a dead person”. However Lorenzo insisted that they felt no fear when she was with them. Her hair was extremely black and she always wore the same white dress that appeared to be a little “worn”. People would tell them that she was a “demon” but Lorenzo didn’t think that was the case.

He remembers that one time they asked her if they could hug her but she told them not to touch her because if they did she would “get sick” and would not be able to return and play with them. Lorenzo’s younger brother asked her where did she live and the lady looked up at the sun and said that it was very far, “beyond the sun”. “How do you travel back and forth from your home?” she was asked. Her answer was peculiar, “I think of being there and I am there, and then I think of being here and here I appear”.

Winged Chupacabras!

In June of 2010, Puerto Rican police officer Miguel Negron was on patrol with another officer when they heard what they described as the "beating of powerful wings."  At the same time, they were hit by a powerful, rotten odor coming from what they believed to be a large, bat-like creature.

It wasn't an isolated report.  Numerous residents in southwestern Puerto Rico were claiming attacks and sightings of the bizarre, winged thing that year.  Reading over the reports, one imagines a winged gargoyle swooping down from the skies.

Perhaps the most intense report was from a man named Valdo.  He told police that he was attacked in his yard one night by a "large winged animal" that swept down on him and left deep claw marks on his chest and back before he was able to escape.

Locals claimed that the creature would come out to hunt during the night, and could also be seen in the early hours of the morning.  They believed that was living in the underground tunnels and ruins surrounding the Guanica Sugar Mill.

The creature was described as a huge humanoid like being with large wings resembling those of a bat.  It was blamed for the slaughter of numerous animals in the region as well as attacks on several local residents.  Purportedly, the creature was a blood drinker much like the infamous Chupacabras.

June 2016 BEK Update

Here are some recent BEK encounters that have been reported around the net.

First up, Keith from Australia got in touch with Dave Schrader over at Darkness Radio to report on his encounter with a pair of black eyed girls who showed up at his door with bloody hands.  The report is even more unusual in that one of the girls grabbed Keith by the arm during the encounter.

I should note here that a couple of people have criticized the report since the city Sydney is misspelled and they believe this indicates a phony report.  BUT, this report was read on air and was transcribed by another party, so spelling errors don't indicate any fraud here, merely honest mistakes by the transcriber.

See the full report over at Phantoms and Monsters:

In the last few years, there have been an increasing number of reports of black eyed adults.  While there's something much creepier about the children, the encounters with adults with solid black eyes can also be very unnerving.

A report over at Week in Weird has been posted and it details a Pennsylvania encounter with a black eyed adult from the 1990s, the very ear of the modern wave of BEK sightings.  Check it out here:

Finally, we have another report over at Phantoms and Monsters aptly titled "Don't Let Them In!"  It's also a report shared by Darkness Radio.

RIP John Green

Sad news for the Bigfooting world as legendary Sasquatch investigator John Green has passed away.

John was raised in Vancouver and was a graduate of UBC with an M.A. in Journalism from Columbia University in New York.  Over the years, he won numerous awards for his editorial writing.

Green also served a stint in the Navy and was fond of sailing, building and racing his own boats.

He was serious about the subject of Sasquatch and wrote several books on the topic including the fantastic "Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us," regarded by the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) as the best book on the subject.

Green passed away May 28th, he was 89 years old.

He will be fondly remembered. Condolences to his family.

Haunted B&B Pennsylvania

Members of The Society of the Supernatural were recently in Pennsylvania to appear as special guests at the sold out Pennhurst Paracon.

While there we stayed, where else but, at a haunted location.  This is an old B&B with some pretty fascinating history.  Even though we were all road weary, we did a brief live stream on Friday night before the conference to see what kind of activity there was at the location.

We're hoping to do some further research into the home and it's hauntings, until then, check out the clip below to see what we came up with.

In The Grip of Demons

A small town in northern Peru is in the grip of fear as it faces what is being labeled a mass, demonic possession.  Close to a hundred children have been affected in an ongoing situation that began on the 29th of April.
This bizarre case is not an isolated incident.  Numerous cases of this type have occurred in the past several years at schools around the world.  Is the devil himself appearing at these locations?
Read more in my new article, "In the Grip of Demons" in this month's issue of PP&S News.

Haunted Robb Canyon

Robb Canyon, in Rainbow Ridge Park is just west of the city of Reno, Nevada.

Over the years, the spot has gained a reputation as one of the most active haunted areas in the western U.S.  But the story is anything but straightforward.

Legend says that four mutilated bodies were discovered in the canyon in the 1970s.  The bodies, three men and one woman, were never identified, so many people believe that their restless spirits haunt the canyon, seeking justice or revenge.  Speculations of mob killings and serial killers have played a roll in the lore of the unsolved murders.  But what really happened?  More to the point, did anything at all happen?

The confusion arises when digging into the facts connected to the murders.  Although the story is firmly rooted in local lore, there seems to be little to no information on the murder case or the discovery of the bodies in Nevada news archives.  But this doesn't exactly solve the case since there are also rumors of some kind of cover up of the information in the case.

Even the reports by local residents are confusing.  Some people claim that nothing happens in the canyon, others say their neighbors are just afraid to talk and don't want more attention on the area.

Some residents have reported hearing blood curdling screams, seeing strange figures moving in the canyon, and even hearing and seeing the spirits of children in the playground that has been built in the area.

There's no doubt that numerous teams of paranormal investigators have had strange experiences in the canyon.  Reports from teams across the country include accounts of being pushed, held down and attacked, and having objects throw at them.

Then there are the reports of strange shadow figures seen moving around the canyon.  Some describe them as shadow people, others say they don't appear exactly human, but not animal either.

Recently, the Society of the Supernatural conducted an investigation in the canyon to see what we could come up with.  It was in interesting location to say the least.  Did something occur in the canyon, or have wandering spirits been attracted to the spot because of its unusual energy?

Chicago Mothman Sightings

According to a MUFON report from 2011, a couple in Chicago may have photographed Mothman.

The married couple were taking pictures with a smartphone on August 22, 2011 when they captured the image.  They say they didn't spot the strange figure in the sky when they were snapping the pics, but only noticed it later when going over the photographs.  The photographer claims that when he enlarged the picture, distinctly bat-like wings became evident.

And it's not the only case of such a creature in Chicago that year.  On the evening of September 30th, students living in the area around Miller Park in the University Park neighborhood of Chicago had a strange encounter.
Two female students were getting dressed to go out for the evening when they saw a pair of large, round, orange eyes peering at them thorough their window.  Their third floor window that is.  The women stood in their apartment, frozen in shock as the creature hovered outside.  They reported being overwhelmed with fear and felt like they were being eyed as prey.

At least six other students in the area also reported the creature.  They described it as between 6 and 7 feet tall, dark grey to black in color with glowing eyes.  They witnessed it ascend into the air and reported that its huge wings made a whooshing sound when it flew.

And the sightings continued.  A young couple enjoying an evening walk on the night of October 14th also spotted the flying figure.  Hearing a commotion amongst a group of people, the couple looked up in time to see what they described as a man with wings flying about 12 feet above them.  One witness to the incident stated that the creature was perfectly silhouetted against the evening sky and reminded her of an immensely oversized Sugar Glider that she had seen back at her home in Tasmania, Australia.

"But they were nothing like the soft eyes of a glider.  These glowed red!  We saw it for about four seconds before it disappeared from view.  At first, I thought I was looking at a man in a hang glider, but it was those bloody eyes that made me think otherwise!"

Winged Humanoid in Chile

Some of the accounts that come out of both Central and South America are pretty intriguing.  Having spent time there, I can tell you, the pace and the people are very unique and they take things like this very differently than those in the west.  Here's a weird encounter from Chile about a strange, winged creature:

Security guard, Oscar Solar Valdebenito encountered a strange, flying creature in Angol, Chile in 2008 while making his rounds at the Preventative Custody Center.

Valdebenito reports that he was walking the perimeter around the building with four guard dogs when a winged being flew down and pounced on the canines.  The dogs were so frightened by the creature that they raced away from the scene howling.

The guard watched as the winged creature flew up and landed on the top of a 30 foot tall metal pole, causing the pole to shake under its weight.

He describes the creature as around four feet tall with a small head.  While he was never close enough to make out facial details, he did note two pointed ears on either side of the head.  He described the skin as dark gray and devoid of any feathers or fur.  The two long wings extended from its shoulders and while the creature perched on the pole, it tucked its wings in like a bird.  The guard also saw two powerful lower legs and a pair of stubby arms just below the neck.

The only sound coming from the creature was a sharp, loud squawking cry that reminded the guard of a loudspeaker's crackle.

Valdebenito reports that the encounter terrified him and that he was relieved when the creature flew off over several low hanging power lines and out of sight.  He told the authorities that during his encounter, he saw a group of young boys walking along the nearby railroad tracks.  They also spotted the creature but fled the area at the sight of the winged humanoid.  Authorities were not able to locate the boys.
